About the Exhibit
Advertisements have always been a pivotal part of human culture; from cave paintings to market signs, our advertisements developed alongside our cultural practices throughout the centuries. The Fall exhibit showcases advertisements ranging from the 18th century to the 20th century in a display of cultural development through material wares. Included in this exhibit is a Centennial Edition of the Kalamazoo Gazette from 1937, a 1789 newspaper from Scotland, and original serial publications of Charles Dicken’s most famous novels! “Shopping Through Time: Advertisements in Books, Newspapers and Magazines” showcases commercial culture through material consumerism in enticing products and imagery from across the centuries.
